On-Road National
Championships Sunday, April 25, 2010
Here
is a chance for the duathlon community to once again showcase their sport. Last year's event boasted the largest Duathlon field ever in the U.S., which means even better things to come in 2010! You'll love the
downtown Richmond environment and the European feel to the festival.
You will be able to walk to the event from your downtown hotel.
The on-road events' transition
area, start and finish will all be within walking distance of New Market’s corporate
headquarters at 2nd and Byrd streets in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
You do not have to qualify to compete. No drafting is allowed for any event.
Sunday's on-road events are now closed. For the safety of our athletes, no registrations will be accepted for Sunday's events since it has reached capacity.
There will be achange in the first run distance for the On-Road Age Group National Championship this year. As a result of a decision by the USAT Duathlon Committee, the first run will be a 5k instead of a 10k. See below for updated course maps.
To go directly to the race information you are looking for, select one of the following topics:
USAT Age Group National Championships The USAT National
Championships will
feature a 5k run, a 38k bike and a 5k run. The race will start on Byrd Street and is a fast and scenic loop that goes through downtown, then along the Canal Walk and Brown's Island before heading back into transition. The 38k bike course is a three loop course that
traverses Lee Bridge, the beautiful Riverside Drive and has a wide open turnaround in Forest Hill Park. The
5k run, after the bike, leaves transition and is the same as the first 5k course except for first 400 meters. Even though this is a USAT National Championship
event it is open to anyone that would like to enter. No qualifying is necessary.
Sport
Race and USAT Junior National Championships A good way
to get started in duathlon is the sport race which is shorter
distance than the full National Championship course. The race is
a 5k (3.1miles) run with a 13k (8 miles) bike and a 2.5k (1.5
miles) run. The course is all downtown with the run on Brown’s
Island and the canal walk and the bike is in and around the Lee
Bridge in downtown Richmond. The course will be for bikes only
with no cars or motorized vehicles. The teenage competitors “Junior”
riders ages 13-15, 16-19 compete on the same course as the sport
competitors. No drafting is allowed in the Junior National Championship race. There are no qualifying races or standards for this
event.
Youth USAT National Championships The kids "youth" races will be held on Saturday, April 24 at noon. Note this is the only on-road event being held on Saturday. This is a great way to introduce young kids to duathlon racing in a secure and friendly environment. The age groups 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 compete on a 1k run, 2.5k bike and a 1k run. Parents will easily be able to watch the action as the kids do one lap on the 4k bike course and the run is all within sight of the transition area. No drafting will be allowed. Kids will enjoy the fun atmosphere and parents will be able to cheer their young duathletes on to finish the course.
The kids (youth) races are open to anyone. The kids should be capable of finishing these distances on their own. They will be running and riding on a course with no vehicles with plenty of course marshals. A basic knowledge of bike safety is required.
Du Duo On-Road Relay This event is for those who like to either run or bike, but not both. One team member will run the 5k at the beginning and the 5k at the end, then the other teammate will bike the 38k in the middle. This event will take place on the same course as the on-road championships and will start at 9:10 with the men's 30-34 age group racers. Please note that only two person teams may enter. Please enter your team name in the appropriate pace on the entry. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative team names.

USA TRIATHLON MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENT
In order to participate in any of the events, you must be a current annual member of USA Triathlon and show your membership card when you pick up your race packet. If you are not a member, you can either become an annual member for $39 online or purchase a $10 one-day license when picking up your packet. Youth can become annual members for $5 either online or at packet pick-up. One day licenses are not available for youth. YOU MUST PURCHASE AN ANNUAL OR ONE DAY MEMBERSHIP OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE (and you will forfeit your event entry fee). A one-day license allows you to compete in a USAT-sanctioned race without purchasing an annual membership. The $10 fee provides you with excess accident insurance for that race only. A one-day license cannot be purchased through the national office. Make sure to bring $10 with you to packet pick-up, or become an annual member. Please visit usatriathlon. org if you have any questions.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION Please note:
Entry fees are non-refundable and entries are non-transferable, no exceptions.
This race is sanctioned by, and conducted under the rules of, USA Triathlon.
None of the events are draft legal.
All of the events are open to everyone with no qualifying required.
EVENT VENUE and TRANSITION AREA INFO The Start/Finish and Transition
Area is the field adjacent to 2nd Street and bordering New Market
Corporation. The address is 330 South 4th Street, Richmond, VA 23219.
The transition area will be open Saturday, April 24 at 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm for bike check-in. It is mandatory that you check your bike in during this time. You do not need to leave anything but your bike overnight (helmets, etc. can be brought with you on Sunday morning). Rack space will be assigned by number. USAT Officials and Event Volunteers will be present to assist and ensure all bikes are racked properly. Heavy security will be present all Saturday evening and into Sunday morning.
Throughout the weekend, be sure to follow all of the well-marked access point signs and volunteer instructions for traffic flow. This will ensure a safe and smooth transition area for everyone.
You will be able to retrieve your bike after the majority of athletes in your age group have finished through one well-marked exit. The Transition Area is designed so that athletes that have completed their race will not impede athletes still racing. No bikes will leave the transition area without the athlete and running bib number, no exceptions. This is to protect your property.
Separate run in/out and bike in/out access points will be used for racers. Since the waves start at 7:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day, please stay out of the run in/out and bike in/out chutes unless your wave has begun.
